canine advantage fleaAdvantage flea medicine is a topical flea treatment available for both dogs and cats.  The product destroys adult fleas and flea larvae extremely quickly.  Using Imidacloprid, which targets insect nervous systems only, Advantage flea drops have an exceptionally high safety record.  Destroying fleas at different stages in their life-cycle means using Advantage regularly will eliminate the entire flea population in your home and yard.

How to Use Advantage Flea Drops

feline advantage flea dropsTopical flea drops such as Advantage are extremely simple to use.  Firstly ensure you have the correct dose for your pet.  Advantage is sold for dogs and cats of various weights, never use a dose designed for a larger or different animal to yours.

Part the fur between the animal’s shoulder blades to expose the skin.  Then simply pour on the oily liquid directly onto the skin’s surface.  Now keep your pet in for half an hour so you can ensure they do not remove the flea drops (by rubbing or licking them).

That’s it.  Repeat the process every 30 days to ensure your pet remains flea free.

Advantage Flea Drops FAQ

How quickly does Advantage Flea Medicine work? Within 5 minutes of applying Advantage, adult fleas will stop biting.  One hour after application fleas near the site of application will be dead.  Within 12 hours all the adult fleas on your pet will have been destroyed.  Within twenty minutes of exposure to Advantage, flea larvae are also killed.

Are Advantage Flea Drops safe? Yes, the active ingredient contained in Advantage targets the nervous system of insects only, not higher animals, making these much safer than old fashioned insecticide based products.  Advantage is safe for use on puppies from seven weeks and kittens from eight weeks old.

In rare cases sensitivities to any flea medicine may occur.  If your pet shows signs any symptoms monitor and consult your vet if they persist.  Advantage flea drops will irritate the eyes so ensure you use the product carefully and avoid getting into either your pet’s or your eyes.

What if my pet swallows Advantage Flea Medicine? Although this is of course to be discouraged, ingestion of small quantities of Advantage flea drops is usually not accompanied by any problem.  Occasionally cats will manage to lick some of the product, in which case keep your pet indoors and monitor them.  If side-effects persist consult your vet.

Can I use Advantage Flea Drops on pregnant or nursing animals? It is not recommended to do so without first consulting your vet.  Similarly chronically ill or underweight animals should not be given any flea medicine without first speaking to your vet.

Does Advantage kill ticks? No, it is recommended that dogs likely to be exposed to ticks use a tick collar in addition to Advantage for dogs, such as the Preventic Tick Collar.

Is Advantage Flea Medicine Waterproof? Yes, the flea drops are distributed in an oil based liquid.  Once absorbed into the skin, the flea killing power is not affected by bathing, swimming or being out in the rain.

Advantage Flea Medicine is now one of the most widely used topical flea treatments.  It is mild yet extremely effective at controlling external parasites on both our cats and dogs.
